I have two smaller projects; the first is a study on the educational culture and beliefs of China—through both a mathematics lens and as a whole. I want to study and research the culture/climate of the educational system, family expectations, student expectations, the design of the educational system and specifically how they teach mathematics and why this is successful. I also want to look at their belief system about mistakes.
For project two, I am responsible for bringing back information to aid in a sixth grade unit on ancient China and a 4th grade novel set in China. I specifically want to explore the cultural perspectives, experiences and expectations of kids and adults in China. I am hoping to see and experience as many new opportunities as possible to bring back a greater understanding.
